Bulgaria - The Land of Wonders...

Foreigners usually associate the word Bulgaria with the beaches on the Black Sea or with the ski runs in the high Bulgarian mountains Rila, Pirin and Vitosha. However, the country’s real charm is in its millennial cultural and historical heritage.

Bulgaria was founded in 681 AD and it is one of the oldest European states. However, even with its 13-centuries-long tradition, the state is merely an infant compared to the history of civilisation in the present-day Bulgarian lands.

These lands have been populated ever since the Palaeolithic Age. Traces of the first European dwellers were discovered here, near Belogradchik. An example of a script dating back approximately 6,800 years was found near the town of Montana: a stone tablet on which 24 still undeciphered signs are written in four rows. The oldest gold treasure in Europe from the Chalcolithic Age, i.e., from 60 centuries ago, was found near the Black Sea port Varna in 1972. The objects with a total weight of 1.516 kg comprise dynastic symbols as well, which suggests the existence of a state formation in that region since the remotest antiquity. The ethnic belonging of the people who had created these masterpieces is still unclear.
